Soundscapes of Memory
Selection: Aleksandra Sekulić
Sound – The trigger of memory, the means of freeing memory, the reconstruction of the memory process. From experimental sound construction, a formal paraphrase of memory de-fragmenation, to a re-imagining of the missing sound, a conceptual answer to an interpretation of memory. Soundscapes offers a sound-navigated walk through a particular individual imagination, merging in a gallery interpretation.

A machine is any apparatus which transmitts or transforms energy. An apparatus for increasing the value of the force, the change of the direction, its action, or increasing of velocity of some labor performance. Plankton signifies a community of living organisms who float while not visibly having the ability to move. If they lose the necessary oxygen, they die. With this work I want to show that belief is not reduced to the belief in supernatural powers, deities or similar everyday uses of the word, but is refering to the belief or disbelief in the accuracy of a judgment. The body is a mechanical apparatus, but the brain is alive, and thoughts are swarming and tossing upon each other. When the activity of the mechanical energy stops, the apparatus stops. When plankton loses fluid it dies, nothing comes from nothing and is not only by itself. Our belief is based on observing processes, but what we can’t explain we often mystify, adding elements of the divine or supernatural to the inexplicable. Belief in the accuracy of an event is based on our perception. The perception is conditioned by the social and cultural background and ability of each of us, individually we can’t know the truth. We can only believe in what is true for us.

Native Americans are living in fenced Indian reservations in times when signs of a brutal history completely disappeared. Monuments remembering the loss are rare and voids remain. For two hours an empty billboard in Utah converted into an ephemeral interactive memorial. An investigation of history and memory, meaning and interpretations, whiskey, tango, foxtrot.

Los Angeles dogs and puppies. Sidewalk – rich, poor, famous, empty. Beverly Hills lost and found in translation. Who is the dog – we are what we do, watch out for the sweet and lovely lamp posts – in broad light, by day and by night.

A motel bathroom – a hidden place for poor clothes shootouts. No pre-composed audio tracks at this time, a peaceful real-time living system on its own. Quietness, slowness. Continuous rhizome multi-channel instruments, only disturbed by human impact. Artistic reflections on the recurring contrasts between nature and urban environment and the American historical efforts to control nature. Cities represent the most intensive human modifications of the physical environment.
